After growing up in a baseball hotbed, Hector Moreno took to soccer and is now a mainstay for the national team.

MEXICO CITY — Hector Moreno was raised in the baseball heartland of Culiacan in the state of Sinaloa, where he grew up as a fan of the local Pacific League baseball team Culiacan Tomateros (Culiacan Tomato Growers).

As a child, he was nicknamed “Cachi” (short for “cachirul”, a ringer or unregistered player) and dreamed of being a singer or baseball player while listening to banda music, before soccer appeared on the horizon.
