Sports Ministry has decided to dissolve the newly elected office bearers of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) due to outgoing committee having failed to submit the audited financial report in time before the election.
The election was declared null and void and the Boxing Association’s newly elected President Dian Gomes and his committee will lose their positions and they will have to face fresh elections with the date to be decided by the ministry.
“We will issue a special gazette notification soon regarding the matter and the association will come under Director General of sports just as badminton for the time being,” said R.B. Wickramasinghe, Assistant Director General of Sports who is responsible for matters related to National Sports Associations in the Sports Ministry.
The reason for this decision is due to the failure of the previous committees to submit the audited financial report in time before the elections where that Sports law states that Audited reports should be circulated at least 14 days prior to the election.
The boxing AGM held on May 26 and as for the present secretary the audited financial report has been only circulated on the same day.
“We had a special general meeting on 27th June and we rectified those accounts. As of now we were not informed about dissolving the association but president (Dian Gomes) called me and said that we might get this decision (dissolving) a few days before Gomes went abroad,” said the newly appointed Secretary Sqd. Leader Mohamad Shafrask.
Shafrask said that they will have a meeting with their present committee members on a later date to decide their future action.
When asked whether he will contest again he said he has not decided about it.
Wickramasinghe confirmed that former office bearers who were responsible for not submitting the audited report on time, will not be eligible for re-election.
Deputy Inspector General (Rtd) Rohan Abeywardena was the president of the Boxing Association prior to election while Mahesh Dahanayake was the secretary.
Earlier, the ministry took the same decision regarding Badminton Association making its AGM null and void and the Badminton Association is now run by DG.
