The government has launched a project worth LKR 450 million to encourage school children across the island to engage in sports. The inaugural event, chaired by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Sunil Kumara Gamage, was held today (08th) at the Department of Sports Development, where the official distribution of sports equipment to several schools commenced.
Full Funding for Grounds and Equipment
Out of the total LKR 450 million allocated for the project, funds will be utilized for the development of school playgrounds and the provision of sports gear. As the first phase, sports equipment worth LKR 25 million was distributed today. Symbolically, the Minister handed over equipment sets to three selected schools. These kits include gear for cricket, rugby, netball, as well as throwing and jumping equipment for track and field events.
Speaking at the event, Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage stated, “Sports is no longer just a hobby. We are directing school students toward sports while securing their future. Cabinet approval has already been granted for several programs aimed at providing job opportunities and all necessary facilities for talented athletes.”
Is the Sports Authority to blame for the Volleyball Team crisis?
Director General of Sports, Mr. S. Achthudan, who also attended the event, addressed the recent issue where a national volleyball team was unable to travel abroad. He clarified that the delay was not the fault of the Department of Sports or the Ministry.
He noted that although the team was scheduled to depart on May 8th, the list of names was provided to selection officers only on April 29th, and the relevant documents reached the Department on April 30th. Since documents that should be submitted 21 days in advance were provided only in the final week, both players and parents faced severe inconvenience. He emphasized that an explanation has been sought from the relevant Volleyball Association and stressed that everyone must act responsibly while managing the government’s limited funds.
